Simpson’s Trial Is Pushed Back 6 Months

By STEVE FRIESS

LAS VEGAS — O.J. Simpson will not be tried on armed robbery and kidnapping charges until at least September, six months after his trial had been scheduled to start in April.

District Judge Jackie Glass on Friday said she didn't want a delay but did so because to give prosecutors time to analyze and enhance tape recordings and other evidence and then provide the results to defense attorneys of Mr. Simspon and two other defendants, John Ehrlich and Clarence (C.J.) Stewart. All three have pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The new trial date is Sept. 8. The case had been scheduled to begin on April 7.

"There will be absolutely, positively no reason" for another delay, Judge Glass said, admonishing attorneys from all sides.

Judge Glass did not rule on whether the three defendants should be tried together or separately, as attorneys for Mr. Ehrlich and Mr. Stewart would like. It is unclear when she will make that decision.

She ruled against the motion to throw out any of the charges against Mr. Simpson and two other defendants, John Ehrlich or Clarence (C.J.) Stewart, although her comments reflected her own doubts about the strength of certain charges.

"At first blush, I said, 'Where's the kidnapping?'." she said, adding that the prosecutor did nonetheless provide the "slight or marginal" evidence needed to present the case to a jury.

The three are accused of a dozen felonies, including kidnapping and armed robbery, after storming a Las Vegas hotel room on Sept. 13 with three other men and departing with sports memorabilia items from two collectibles dealers. In dispute is who actually owned some of the items — Mr. Simpson said they were stolen from him years ago — and whether Mr. Simpson knew that some of the men were carrying guns.

Three of the men involved have made deals with prosecutors and are expected to testify against Mr. Simpson, Mr. Ehrlich and Mr. Stewart.

Mr. Simpson was not in Las Vegas on Friday, but Mr. Ehrlich and Mr. Stewart were in the courtroom. Neither they nor any of the defense attorneys made comments.
