LAS VEGAS: A wealthy former pawn shop owner from
Reno who was sought in the stabbing death of his estranged wife
and the shooting of the judge hearing their divorce case surrendered
Thursday night in Mexico, ending a 10-day search, the authorities
said Friday.
The man, Darren R. Mack, 45, was taken into custody at the
United States Consulate in Puerto Vallarta. The police said
Mr. Mack had fled to Puerto Vallarta after the June 12 killing
of his wife, Charla Mack, 39, and the shooting of Judge Chuck
Weller, 53, of Reno Family Court.
Mr. Mack, who had no criminal record, was unarmed, the authorities
said. "We believe he was aware that things were tightening around
him," Chief Michael Poehlman of the Reno Police Department said
at a news conference on Friday.
Mr. Mack waived extradition and was flown to Dallas, where
he was held in the Dallas County Jail pending the arrival of
detectives from Reno. He was expected to be arraigned on charges
of murder and attempted murder. He has retained two of Nevada's
most prominent criminal defense lawyers, Scott Freeman of Reno
and David Chesnoff of Las Vegas.
